![]() Courses At present in Hungary there are three main areas or courses where disc golf can be played:
The first course in the Orczy Kert is the only one where there are fixed baskets on public land (currently only three of them are concreted in place, baskets have been made for a further three positions and are yet to be installed). The baskets for Hungary's first permanent fixed position disc golf course were made possible and sponsored by Fe-Ferrum Kereskedelmi & Szolgátató Kft. , and produced with many hours of hard labour by József Jesztl. Special thanks to Fe-Ferrum for their kind sponsorship, to Simon Feasey in New Zealand for his basket design, Jóska for making the baskets, Benny for the legal work, Dani for whatever it was that he did, and finally El Presidente for painting them.

The Hajógyári or Obuda Sziget (island) is where disc golf is most often played, however there are no fixed baskets on the island. The baskets are stored at the Canoe and Kayak Club Bufé, and you need to kiss the hand of the old ladies there to get them out. Alternatively hook up with some local niggas and we will show you around. Email Dylan Cooper for a hookup, the regular day for playing is Sunday, after attending the local mosque. Righteous! In total there are actually THREE full eighteen hole disc golf courses on the Obudai Island. Situated at the south end of the island is the Classic course, closest to the Canoe and Kayak Club Bufé in order to have easy access to hard liquor. This course was developed by Jeff Blount and El Presidente in the early days of Hungarian disc golf, and as such is a rather short course reflecting the ability of the players in the mid-90s, before the big arm was developed, and when the fastest disc around was a DX Eagle. Slight changes have been made to the tees and the exact basket positions are always contentious, but in essence the same course has been played continuously since 1995/96. Currently (and no surprises really) the course record of -12 is held by El Presidente for the Classic, probably due to the fact that he has played it more times than anyone else in the world.
The second course is the Alternative 18, which now consists of three basket positions. This is at the north end of the island, and was developed out of necessity when in spring and early summer hordes of people descended on our beloved island, and the Classic became unplayable for disc golfers. The Alternative is in general longer but still a fairly simple course, most holes requiring nothing short of a straight or left/right hooking drive for a birdy, or in the course of an errant drive a 30-50 metre up-shot through clear spaces for a par. The signature hole is at the second basket position and is a long straight par 4 hole of 210 metres, open for left and right handers. The course record for this three-basket configuration of the Alternative 18 was set in 2008 by El Presidente in the following week after setting the record on the Classic, and currently stands at -10 or 45 shots.
Finally, after over a decade of disc golf on the Obudai sziget, the boyz realised that if disc golf was ever going to progress in Hungary a serious course needed to be designed and developed. The other major factor behind the need for an improved course was that with the bigger numbers turning up to the Budapest Open, a course needed to be designed that accommodated eighteen basket positions, rather than the traditional three-shots-at-six-baskets to make up the eighteen holes. The result was the very long and demanding Tournament Course, traversing the length of the island and utilising every feature of the topography and trees along the way. First played in 2007, this tough course has a par of 55 and a tournament best of 50 shot by József Jesztl at a 2008 Hungarian qualifying tournament for the European Disc Golf Championships. This feat is made all the more amazing when one considers that after three years of holding the Obuda Open tournament of the Austro Hungaro Tour the next best score is only 54! Between 40-50 of the best disc golf players in Austria and Hungary playing three rounds of golf over three years have not been able to top the course record of 50 set by Jóska. Well done that man.
The course at the Kastélypark in Tóalmas is on private land, and is owned and run by a branch of a Christian movement, whose name escapes me right now. You will need to contact them directly for permission to visit them and play on their land. They have nine baskets permanently fixed in the ground, and several positions for all of the baskets, making a total of 27 possible holes.
