Disc Golf in Hungary
Disc golf is still a minority sport in Hungary, but it has a small and dedicated band of followers and practicioners.

Disc golf had it's beginnings in Hungary in 1995, when a guy that was getting too old to play Ultimate tried to talk some younger Ultimate players into going out and playing disc golf. Only one guy really got into that, and from these two disc golf started to grow, with some of the younger Hungarian guys from the Ultimate crowd becoming interested in this sport as time went on.

The old guy got a couple of baskets made by a friend in Germany, and disc golf as a sport began to be played on the Obuda island in the middle of the Danube. Various foreigners (mainly of American extraction) who already had played the sport joined with the small crowd of regulars in Hungary, augmenting the group of people going out for disc golf to the Obuda Island. Occasionally a small festival gets in the way every August, but apart from that the sport in Hungary has blossomed in summer, autumn, winter and spring!

Szent Niló Hegy

The first ever disc golf tournament in Hungary was held in 1995 on the Obuda Island, and the sport has continued to grow ever since, with the Budapest Open being a regular annual fixture. In addition to the local players, disc golfers from New Zealand, England, America, Austria, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Slovakia, Switzerland and the Czech Republic have all taken part in this tournament. At the last edition (the 15th!) of the Budapest Open on 7-8 March 2009 a record 53 people played!
