Central European League (CEL)
A new initiative has started in 2009 for disc golf players in Central Europe. The idea has been discussed for a long time, and has now come to fruition, with four tournaments in four countries being designated to form a Central European super-tour.

The four tournaments are held in the Central European strongholds of disc golf, namely Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and the Czech Republic. All four of these countries have their own disc golf Tours and tournaments, at various courses located around these countries, and attended regularly by a core of players.

It has become customary for players from each of these countries to travel to neighbouring countries and participate in their disc golf tournaments. In light of this, it seemed natural to hold a Tour within a Tour, and the idea of the Central European League was born.

The CEL in 2009 consists of the Budapest Open (Hungary, 7-8 March), Smolenice Open (Slovakia, 6-7 June), H!O Open Buschberg (Austria, 5-6 September) and the Prague Open (Czech Republic, 10-11 October). Currently the Prague Open clashes with an Austro-Hungaro tour event in Wagrain, watch this space to see how this is resolved.

Each player will be awarded points according to their placing in each of the four tournaments. The person with the most total points from their best three finishes in the four tournaments above will then be crowned the first Central European champion of disc golf. After the first tournament, the Budapest Open, the current standings in the top 10 are:

  1. Andy Barth (AT)
  2. Dylan Cooper (HU)
  3. Otfried Derschmidt (AT)
  4. Hannes Petz (AT)
  5. Dani Hatvani (HU)
  6. Bernd Wender (AT)
  7. Werner Moosehammer (AT)
  8. Martin Zeilbauer (AT)
  9. Stefan Dobrev (SK)
  10. Mike Horak (AT)

And of course these placings are bound to change after the next tournament in the CEL, the Smolenice Open in Slovakia on 6-7 June!
